RULES

1. RULES OF ELIGIBILITY

1.1.
The competitive section of FamaFest’ 2009 –XI International Film and Video Festival of Famalicão - “Cinema and Literature” that will be held in Vila Nova de Famalicão from 14th to 22nd March 2009, is open to all professional or non-professional film and video makers, national or foreign.

1.2.
The primary objective of FamaFest will be the promotion and development of cultural and artistic values, mainly in cinema and literature, so as to encourage the love for cinema and literature, studying and debating the subjects connected with the adaptation of literary works. It will be addressed a very special attention to cinema and video produced by Portuguese Speaking Countries. The authors from those countries will also compete to the Lusophony Special Prize.

1.3.
All entries must have been completed after January 1, 2007.

1.4.
Films and videos - feature films, short films, fiction or documentaries - may enter in the following categories:
1.ADAPTATIONS FROM LITERARY WORKS
2.BIOGRAPHIES AND DOCUMENTARIES ABOUT LITERARY SUBJECTS
3. ADAPTATIONS FROM LITERARY WORKS FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE
Eligible formats are:
A - CINEMA: 35 mm film
B - VIDEO: Betacam in the standard Pal format
C – DVD: Zone 2
2. SUBMISSIONS

2.1
All entries must use the form hereby included (xeroxes are accepted) and must be received by the Festival before February, 20, 2009. All entry forms should be filled-in carefully, in print characters, so that the information they contain can be correctly included in the catalogue.

2.2
All prints must be received by the Festival before March 1st, 2009.

2.3
There is no limit to the number of works entered by each candidate. A completely filled-in entry form must be sent for each film or video submitted. Each entry form should be accompanied by photos or slides of the film/video submitted, as well as a photo, curriculum and biographic notes of the director(s). Any promotional material will be welcome, to be used in press kits and promotion.

3. PRINTS

3.1
Eligible formats are:
A - CINEMA: 35 mm film
B - VIDEO: Betacam in the standard Pal format
C – DVD: Zone 2

3.2
Films and videos must be spoken or subtitled in portuguese, spanish, french or english language.

3.3
Films or videos competing for the Lusophony Prize are only accepted when spoken in portuguese (whenever possible with english subtitles), even when including other languages or dialects.

4. AWARDS

4.1
The juries shall award, with no possibility of ex-aequo:
I. Grande Prémio FamaFest’ 2009 (Câmara Municipal de Famalicão) – 3.750 Euros (three thousand seven hundred and fifty euros), award for the best film or video among all divisions
II. Grande Prémio FamaFest’ 2009 / Lusophony - 3.750 Euros (three thousand seven hundred and fifty euros), award for the best film or video produced and directed in a Portuguese Speaking country and spoken in portuguese language.
III. In each one of the following divisions there will be an award of 1.750 Euros (one thousand seven hundred and fifty euros):
1. ADAPTATIONS FROM LITERARY WORKS
2. BIOGRAPHIES AND DOCUMENTARIES ABOUT LITERARY SUBJECTS
3. ADAPTATIONS FROM LITERARY WORKS FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE

4.2
The juries will be able to give special mentions

4.3
The winners will receive along with the cash prize, a trophy and a diploma

5. THE JURY

5.1
All entries will be submitted to a pre-selection jury formed by elements nominated by the Board of Organisation and a well known expert in the audiovisual area, selected by the festival’s Artistic Director.

5.2
All the entries selected by the jury mentioned in 5.1 will be voted by an international jury formed by a minimum of five outstanding personalities with intellectual and cultural competence and recognised merit, selected among experts in cinema, audiovisual, critic and literature.

5.3
All the entries selected for the Grande Prémio de Lusofonia will also be voted by a special jury formed by a minimum of three outstanding personalities with intellectual and cultural competence and recognised merit, particularly on cinema and audiovisual, critic and literary fields.

5.4
The members of the juries will select among themselves their own President who will represent the jury as its spokesman.

5.5
The juries will include as a secretary a member of the FamaFest’ 2009 – XI Famalicão International Film and Video Festival, with no vote right.

5.6
The juries reserve the right not to select a winner in any given category, as well as not to give special mentions.

5.7
No one with any involvement in one or more productions entered may sit on a jury.

5.8
The decisions of the juries are final.

6. FINAL TERMS

6.1
For any legal effects, each candidate is responsible for the works he presents, excluding any responsibility at all to the FamaFest’ 2009 – XI Vila Nova de Famalicão International Film and Video Festival.

6.2
Costs for transport and insurance of prints from their place of origin to the FamaFest’ 2009 – XI Famalicão International Film and Video Festival shall be borne by the owner. The Festival will assume the costs of insurance and return back to its origin, unless the authors decide otherwise.

6.3
The FamaFest’ 2009 – XI Famalicão International Film and Video Festival is not responsible for the damage of the prints during its normal use. In the event of loss or damage to a print due to undued use, FamaFest’ 2008 shall only be liable for the value indicated by the producer on the technical data sheet or a new print made in a portuguese lab. This value shall correspond solely to the value of the print entered. The Festival assumes the costs for storage and insurance of the prints of the selected works while they remain FamaFest’ 2008 official premises.

6.4
All the entries, after being admitted by the pre selection jury, will be included in public screenings, during the FamaFest’ 2009 – XI Famalicão International Film and Video Festival and posted on the festival’s site and blog..

6.5
The FamaFest’ 2009 – XI Famalicão International Film and Video Festival reserves the right to show on TV, cinema or other media, for divulgation, excerpts from the works awarded or others.

6.6
Entrants should provide a tape of any work selected for competition for the archives of the Festival, which utilisation will be made in accordance with the international contract of deposit of World Cinematheques.

6.7
Participation in FamaFest’ 2009 – XI Famalicão International Film and Video Festival - “Cinema and Literature” implies agreement - by signature in entry form - with the present regulations.

6.8
From the decision of the Board of Directors regarding the interpretation and decisions of these rules, there will be no appeal.

6.9
The results of this contest will be known during the closing ceremony of FamaFest’ 2009 – XI Famalicão International Film and Video Festival -
